CAROLINAS REHABILITATION HOSPITAL - An informal but important partner is Carolinas Rehabilitation Hospital. They provide vital equipment storage space in the basement of the hospital. Along with the fact that several therapists there volunteer for Assist M.E., this space has greatly increased our efficiency. This strategic location has also decreased COVID risk in many situations.
CHARLOTTE WOMAN’S CLUB – In the spring of 2020, the Charlotte’s Woman’s Club generously provided a grant to Assist ME. This grant made a huge impact in our ability to continue to serve without turning people away. COVID19 disrupted all aspects of our operation, including the inflow of donated equipment. Assist ME worked out low risk, no contact ways to both provide and receive equipment. The Charlotte Woman’s Club was a key partner in keeping equipment going to those in need.
HOLY ANGELS - This year, Holy Angels (Belmont, NC), a provider of compassionate and dependable care for those with intellectual developmental disabilities, has been a generous donor of a large numbers of used wheelchairs and other items in support of the Assist M.E. mission. Holy Angels receives equipment gifts from families of patients and donors. They periodically develop an excess of some items and graciously share those with Assist M.E. to distribute to those in need in the community. Since much of this equipment is pediatric, Assist M.E. is able to provide Levine Children’s Hospital as a beneficiary.
FRIENDS OF THE DISABLED OF LATIN AMERICA - The amount of equipment from Holy Angels was so generous that we partnered with the Friends of the Disabled of Latin America (FRIDLA). We informed FRIDLA that we had excess pediatric equipment, which the people they serve greatly need. We also provided extra electric power chairs for their effort. In total, Assist M.E. and FDLA combined to provide three Sprinter vans full of equipment this summer to be shipped via ocean-going container to Uruguay.
DIOCESE OF CHARLOTTE - The fourth partnership we would like to highlight is with the Diocese of Charlotte. The Diocese of Charlotte owns a small building near uptown on Rozzelles Ferry Road and makes 400 square feet of the building available to Assist M.E. for DME storage. The building location is extremely strategic for Assist M.E. due to its proximity to the Carolinas Rehabilitation Hospital and Atrium Main Hospital, as well as those in need in the community. This unique and generous arrangement makes it possible for Assist M.E. to provide large amounts of equipment to the two hospitals in uptown and to people on the west side of Charlotte.
